Grizzlies Rebound with 4-1 Win at Wilton

The Guilford Varsity Team's 3-0 start to the 2023 season earned them a top-10 ranking in the GameTimeCT Weekly Baseball Poll, something Guilford Baseball hasn't achieved in quite some time. In order to maintain that honor, the Grizzlies would need to quickly get back to winning after suffering their first loss of the season on Monday. Less than 24 hrs. later, they did just that in a 4-1 victory over the Wilton Warriors at Wilton HS on Tuesday.

Andrew Shosho got his 2nd start of the season for Guilford, and the big righty had another outstanding performance as he notched his first win of the season. Shosho went 5-1/3 innings and gave up just 1 run on 2 hits, while striking out 5 Warriors in the process. Although the Grizzly offense wasn't able to post a big number, Shosho made sure the Warrior lineup never threatened the lead.

Offensively, Guilford did most of their damage in the top of the 1st inning when 4 consecutive hits gave them a 3-0 lead. Sam Ametrano got things going when his line drive single to right got past the Wilton outfielder, allowing him to take 2nd on the play. (video) Michael Buccaro then followed with a long triple to center that plated Ametrano for a 1-0 Grizzly lead. (video) Up next was Bryce Meder, who singled to right scoring Buccaro for Guilford's 2nd run. After Meder stole 2nd, Carter Williams singled to center, driving in Meder with Guilford's 3rd run of the inning. (video)

Then neither team scored a run for the next 4-1/2 innings. Although Guilford had several players reach base, including a 1-out triple by Jack Farrah in the 2nd, (video) and a 1-out double by Lucas Ametrano in the 5th, the team could not push another run across until the 6th.

In the top of the 6th, after a Lucas Deshefy 2-out walk, Colin Pompano blasted a triple into the right-center gap, (video) scoring Deshefy from first to make it 4-0, Guilford. In the bottom of the 6th, Deshefy would come on to pitch in relief of Shosho, and worked the final 1-2/3 innings to earn the save.

The 4-1 win improved the Grizzlies' record to 4-1 on the year. They will play their 3rd game in as many days tomorrow in West Haven, when they take on the Blue Devils in a 3:45 pm. start at Whitey Piurek Field. Then they will take a well-earned rest on Thu. before traveling to Hartford's Dunkin' Park on Fri., where they will play the Cheshire Rams at 3:30 pm.
