Grizzlies Win 3rd Straight, Defeat Foran 7-1

Sam Ametrano pitched 6 innings, allowing only 1 run with 7 strikeouts, while the Grizzlies' offense scratched out 7 runs on 10 hits to defeat the Foran Lions in Milford on Tuesday afternoon. The victory was Guilford's 3rd consecutive win, and evens their record at 9-9 with 2 games remaining on their regular-season schedule.

All of the scoring came in the first two innings of the game, as pitchers on both sides settled in for 5 scoreless frames to finish things up. The big difference in the game was Guilford's errorless defense, as the Grizzlies scored 7 runs on 2-RBI.

Mike Buccaro got things going for the Grizzlies in the top of the first when he lined the first pitch of the game into right for a single. Carter Williams followed that up with a double to right that put runners on 2nd & 3rd with 0 outs. Buccaro & Williams would both score on wild pitches that made it 2-0 Guilford, before Foran's first turn at bat.

Ametrano worked around a Foran baserunner in a scoreless bottom of the 1st before his teammates would give him 5 more runs to work with in the top of the 2nd. Jack Farrah lead off with a double and would come in to score when Max Corbett followed him with a RBI single to left that made it 3-0 Grizzlies. (video) Alex Vincent and Tyler Zajkowski followed Corbett with walks that loaded the bases, and both Corbett & Vincent would score when Guilford Co-Captain, Mike Torre, reached on an error. Zajkowski, who moved up to 3rd base on the error, would score the Grizzlies' 6th run on another Foran wild pitch. Co-Captain, Aiden McBrierty, wrapped up the inning with his RBI single to left that scored Torre and made it 7-0, Grizzlies, heading into the bottom of the 2nd. (video)

Foran used 2 of their 5 hits in the game to score their only run in the bottom of the 2nd, but that was all they could muster as Ametrano and a flawless Guilford defense would shut the Lions down over the next 4 innings. Junior, Preston Markham, would come in to close out the game, pitching a scoreless 7th inning that sealed the 7-1 victory for Guilford.

Aiden McBrierty & Jack Farrah both had 2 hits and a run scored for Guilford, with Farrah adding a double and McBrierty a RBI. Sam Ametrano pitched 6 innings, struck out 7 Foran batters, while only allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks.

With their record back to .500, Guilford will host the Amity Spartans on Wed., 5/18, at GHS's Ralph Schipani Field - 4 pm. start. They will then wrap up their regular season with a home matchup vs. Notre Dame-WH on Fri. 5/20.
